SKDC Press Release: Young traders to breathe new life into Grantham Market

A Teenage Market will be helping South Kesteven District Council re-launch its traditional Saturday market on 7 July.

Young traders from 12 to 18 years-old will be running stalls alongside regular traders amidst a food court with hog roast, a pop-up vintage tea room and a cookery demonstration using produce from the market.

Fairground rides and musical entertainment will enliven the market on Westgate and the Market Square, including choirs, a solo singer and a jazz ensemble.

A balloon modeller will be entertaining children and, with a Gravity Fields Festival Family Science Day on St Peters Hill on the same day, organisers expect to see some of the festival entertainers visiting the market.

More teenage markets are being planned for Grantham, confirms Cllr Nick Robins, SKDC Cabinet member for Retail and Visitor Economy.

“We want to see a full calendar of events for the market, and the teenage markets fit well,” he said.

“It’s a fast-growing national initiative that’s transforming town and city centres with the creativity of young people.

“It gives young people a free platform to showcase their creative talents, bringing an influx of energy, vibrancy and diversity to Grantham and encourage other younger traders to come on board.

“It would be great to see some local youngsters registering with The Teenage Market organisation.

“We are committed to holding a market in Grantham and improving on the Saturday offer, bringing the market back to its former activity levels as a great place to visit and shop.”

Market activity will be focused between 10am and 3pm. The youngest trader, Meera Hall from Sleaford, is just 12 years old and will be selling unique handmade iPhone cases.

Other traders will be selling handmade goods, pre-loved designer clothes, new children’s goods, candles and novelties, bespoke and personalised illustrations, cards and keepsakes and henna designs.

Ashley’s comments:

SKDC run markets in Grantham, Bourne and Stamford with occasional special events including themed markets like the forthcoming teenage market.

A recent consultation concerning establishing a Saturday market on the old market place in Market Deeping has attracted over 500 responses of which the vast majority have been extremely positive. SKDC have now formally approached the County for permission to use the market place (which is used most of the time as an LCC car park) with a view to launching the market later this year (2018).
